Celebrated a big birthday by spending a week learning to surf and doing yoga with Pura Vida Adventures at an all women’s retreat. The food was phenomenal, as was the massage, accommodation was clean and comfortable. The resort is on the beach, and you surf directly outside the hotel. Instruction was top notch with a good mix of land instruction, in-water instruction, and video analysis. The camp host, Pri, took us to a magical lunch and on a waterfall hike. She was responsive, friendly and helpful. It was an empowering and approachable way to learn how to surf. I had visited Santa Teresa 24 years ago on a surf trip, and the beauty of this place had never left my mind. Last week, I returned with my 18- and 22-year-old sons for NYE, and it was even more incredible than I remembered. I booked the trip last minute, Tierza (the owner) was incredibly accommodating, making sure everything went smoothly. The trip itself was amazing from start to finish. We travel a lot, and my kids weren’t quite sure what to expect going to a " surf camp" with other people—but from the moment we arrived ( a day late), it was magical. My son who is a camp counselor in the summers , said right away: “This is awesome—an adult sleepaway camp on the beach!” Within the first 8 minutes, we were in Davida’s surf philosophy class in the yoga studio. I won’t lie—the boys were “uncomfortable” at first (eye rolls at 45 minutes in)but three days later, they both said, “Now I get it. Totally understand how it fits, and we really like being part of the group, its fun .” Pri, our host, was incredible—taking care of every need at any time, making the whole experience seamless. The entire surfing staff and Coco the photographer brought so much passion and encouragement—they made you feel safe while pushing you to be the best version of yourself in the water. It was humbling and exhilarating wave after wave . The hotel was simply perfect - incredible location and food exceeded expectations, it is a hidden gem . Our week challenged us physically and mentally BUT was all supported by the encouragement of incredible surfing and yoga instructors we now can call our Costa Rican friends. Thanksgiving this year consisted of a beautiful morning surf session, followed by a relaxing massage and holiday dinner with the best hostess Priscilla and fellow travelers. I am a solo traveler in my early thirties who wanted to use my holiday to learn how to surf. The instructors were kind, patient, and clearly invested in my surfing progression. As a beginner, they made me feel at ease and comfortable navigating the ocean on my surfboard with my mininal prior experience. First off, let me start by saying this review is long overdue, but no less meaningful as it is only a slight exaggeration to say I've been thinking fondly about this trip every day since I returned...almost 7 months ago. I had been following Pura Vida Adventures for years, but finally decided to take myself on a solo 40th birthday adventure, and it is easily one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Santa Teresa / Playa Carmen is beautiful and just enough off the beaten path for my liking, the hotel is lovely, the resort staff are so kind, and the food is delicious and fresh, but this is just icing on the cake - what really made the trip for me was the time spent with my fellow surf "campers," and the instructors. I have taken surf lessons before, but these were unlike any of those in the best way. Davide and the rest of the team's unique and approach - 50% philosophical and 50% scientific - really made things click for me, and it was a joy to see my fellow surf campers improve over the course of the week as well. Speaking of the end of the week, the rest of the folks on the trip decided to buy my photos for me as a birthday present, which was so kind and generous, especially for people who were strangers only one week earlier. EXCELLENTVerified We just returned to Philadelphia from a trip with Pura Vida Adventures in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. Talk about blowing our expectations out of the water (or onto a wave!)! We just returned to Philadelphia from a trip with Pura Vida in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. From start to finish this trip was really enjoyable. Pura Vida (Tierza) was ultra responsive and helpful in the planning of our trip. Hotel Latino in Santa Teresa seamlessly interfaced with the tour provider to attend to all of our needs. The hotel's front desk (Andry and Guadalupe) was ultra attentive and helpful in navigating our excursions and attending to our requests. We took three surf lessons with Nicole during our seven day trip and the lessons were beyond what I could have hoped for. In three lessons, my partner went from zero experience to surfing. I caught more waves in three days than I had caught in my previous twenty years of attempting to surf. Nicole was perfectly suited to teach surf lessons to us. We rode horses down the beach, did morning yoga and even got a couple of tattoos (which have healed up nicely). The hotel is an absolutely dreamy location, on the beach, with a fantastic restaurant and a top notch spa. We both got sixty minute massages and were really impressed with the skill of the masseuses and the facility, given that the spa is on the beach and we were getting the massages in the middle of a raging thunderstorm at 7pm in the evening. We left for home feeling accomplished, yet rested. Thank you very much for all of your efforts to make our stay an enjoyable as it was. The few issues that we had were responded to immediately and addressed faster than I could have expected should they have occurred at a 5 star USA property. The level of politeness of everyone we encountered was really quite surprising and welcome. I would recommend our trip, with Pura Vida Adventures and Hotel Latino, to everyone! I joined two friends for the women's surf & yoga retreat, and immediately bonded with the Pura Vida team, & the other women on the trip. The Pura Vida team, especially Pri (Priscilla) & Tierza are exceptional, the accomodations (Tropico Latino) are top notch, & the restaurant (Shambala) was excellent for breakfast, lunch or dinner. By far, the surf instructors are hands down the very best (Davide, Miche, Nikki), amazing at what they do with so much patience & care. On the yoga side Karen was wonderful, the yoga sessions were perfect, especially after surf. The retreat is set in Santa Teresa, right on the best surfing beach, which makes it perfect for surfers of all levels.The Instructors are some of thee most kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Their Pura Vida Spirit shines from within. They are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about teaching. This was my second time heading to Costa Rica for a Pura Vida Adventure surf camp and it exceeded expectations. I attended surf camp with my sister and a few friends made on our last trip. First, the hotel is PERFECT - tucked into the edge of the jungle and right on the beach, delicious food - a fresh juice every morning, yoga at sunset, massages as you listen to the waves roll in... And the level of surf instruction from ground school to grabbing your first or 101st green wave is second to none. The team at PVA know what they're doing. Whether you come alone or with others, the whole group learns, fails, succeeds and cheers each other on the whole time. Learn new or hone existing surf skills, build friendships, nap in a hammock, spy the monkeys in the trees, relax AND have fun. The whole team is truly wonderful; the coaches are technical and will push you, but are also warm, hilarious, and loving. I learned more in a week here than I did over a dozen private lessons with my local surf company — they don’t push you into waves or scream to “POP UP”, they really break the science of surf down. Pri, the retreat manager, is an angel on earth (literally, you’ll be eating your lunch and she’ll be taking your order for dinner). Hotel Tropico is gorgeous and has the best beach and restaurant in the area. Food is so fresh and delicious. Itinerary is just full enough, with the perfect amount of opportunity to have down time should you choose. And the people! It’s a down to earth vibe, and many campers are returnees (some have been 15 times which says a lot). This was my first solo travel and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
