“What a way to celebrate being 60! AND just what I needed.. a surf vacation in warm water without the bother of a wetsuit. Can't Wait to Go Back!!!
First off, let me start by saying this review is long overdue, but no less meaningful as it is only a slight exaggeration to say I’ve been thinking fondly about this trip every day since I returned…almost 7 months ago. I had been following Pura Vida Adventures for years, but finally decided to take myself on a solo 40th birthday adventure, and it is easily one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. Santa Teresa / Playa Carmen is beautiful and just enough off the beaten path for my liking, the hotel is lovely, the resort staff are so kind, and the food is delicious and fresh, but this is just icing on the cake – what really made the trip for me was the time spent with my fellow surf “campers,” and the instructors. I have taken surf lessons before, but these were unlike any of those in the best way. Davide and the rest of the team’s unique and approach – 50% philosophical and 50% scientific – really made things click for me, and it was a joy to see my fellow surf campers improve over the course of the week as well. Speaking of the end of the week, the rest of the folks on the trip decided to buy my photos for me as a birthday present, which was so kind and generous, especially for people who were strangers only one week earlier. That is exactly the kind of goodness you’ll find at Pura Vida Adventures – something we could probably all use a bit more of these days. I went into this trip thinking it was going to be a once in a lifetime kind of thing for me, but here I am currently plotting my return – I can’t wait to get back there!

I came here 18 years ago. Tierza and I and another woman discussed our hopes an dreams. I think Tierza has gone so far beyond hers. This place, in 2025, is AMAZING!! Pri, Michi, and Davide got me my groove back. YOU MUST COME!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!! I will be back before 2026… I promise. Surfing is a life line for me…these people are my saviors!! 10000000/10.
Life Changing Experience
Pura Vida Adventures surf retreat can be a life changing experience if you let it. Learning to surf allows you to experience physically what you are trying to change mentally. And to do it with such fun, kind and generous people is such a gift. It was so much more than a vacation! In addition to the surfing, we had amazing food, went on incredible adventures (waterfall hikes, bioluminescent snorkeling… just wow), did beachside yoga every day, shopped the cute boutiques of Santa Teresa and more. You only live once and this is such a good way to live it. If you are considering it, do it and don’t look back. Let it change you ☀️
Fantastic Trip
Such a FANTASTIC trip! I will return again and again. Pura Vida Adventures in Santa Teresa Costa Rica has it all: great beach front accommodations, top notch surf instructors with hearts of gold, fabulous food, dangerously delicious cocktails, nonstop fun-filled days, much needed quality massages, fiery red sunsets, barking howler monkeys, spot on daily yoga to rejuvenate, and as much or little surfing as your body can handle. The surf instructors work with your ability one or two on one and everyone improves at her/ his pace. Over the week, the group had so many shared surf victories and we all became friends and better versions of ourselves! Highly recommend!!

We just returned to Philadelphia from a trip with Pura Vida Adventures in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica.

Talk about blowing our expectations out of the water (or onto a wave!)! We just returned to Philadelphia from a trip with Pura Vida in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. From start to finish this trip was really enjoyable. Pura Vida (Tierza) was ultra responsive and helpful in the planning of our trip. Hotel Latino in Santa Teresa seamlessly interfaced with the tour provider to attend to all of our needs. The hotel’s front desk (Andry and Guadalupe) was ultra attentive and helpful in navigating our excursions and attending to our requests. We took three surf lessons with Nicole during our seven day trip and the lessons were beyond what I could have hoped for. In three lessons, my partner went from zero experience to surfing. I caught more waves in three days than I had caught in my previous twenty years of attempting to surf. Nicole was perfectly suited to teach surf lessons to us. We rode horses down the beach, did morning yoga and even got a couple of tattoos (which have healed up nicely). The hotel is an absolutely dreamy location, on the beach, with a fantastic restaurant and a top notch spa. We both got sixty minute massages and were really impressed with the skill of the masseuses and the facility, given that the spa is on the beach and we were getting the massages in the middle of a raging thunderstorm at 7pm in the evening. We left for home feeling accomplished, yet rested. Thank you very much for all of your efforts to make our stay an enjoyable as it was.
The few issues that we had were responded to immediately and addressed faster than I could have expected should they have occurred at a 5 star USA property. The level of politeness of everyone we encountered was really quite surprising and welcome.
I would recommend our trip, with Pura Vida Adventures and Hotel Latino, to everyone! Thank you so much.

Outstanding & Awesome ~ is what comes to mind spending the week with Pura Vida Adventures! I joined two friends for the women’s surf & yoga retreat, and immediately bonded with the Pura Vida team, & the other women on the trip. The Pura Vida team, especially Pri (Priscilla) & Tierza are exceptional, the accomodations (Tropico Latino) are top notch, & the restaurant (Shambala) was excellent for breakfast, lunch or dinner. By far, the surf instructors are hands down the very best (Davide, Miche, Nikki), amazing at what they do with so much patience & care. On the yoga side Karen was wonderful, the yoga sessions were perfect, especially after surf.
What was truly heart warming is spending the time making new friends, with so many laughs, much happiness, continue flow of positive energy from the group.

I just got back from week at Pura Vida Adventures, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. This was my 3rd time, and I will be back! The retreat is set in Santa Teresa, right on the best surfing beach, which makes it perfect for surfers of all levels.
The Instructors are some of thee most kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Their Pura Vida Spirit shines from within. They are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about teaching. They made sure to tailor the lessons to our skill levels, providing personalized feedback that helped me improve my techniques. This includes video analysis which is so helpful.
The accommodations were comfortable and cozy, with a great atmosphere for meeting other surf enthusiasts. The food was delicious and fresh, offering a mix of local and international dishes, which made each meal something to look forward to.
The retreat includes daily yoga. Don’t skip it! It compliments the surfing perfectly. There is also a massage included, and it is so relaxing.
At the beginning of the week, the retreat hostess with the mostest will organize other activities to participate in throughout the week, as you wish.
Whether you’re looking to learn how to surf or improve your skills, Pura Vida Adventures offers a fantastic mix of adventure, relaxation, and community. I highly recommend it!

Wow. Just…wow. This was my second time heading to Costa Rica for a Pura Vida Adventure surf camp and it exceeded expectations. I attended surf camp with my sister and a few friends made on our last trip. First, the hotel is PERFECT – tucked into the edge of the jungle and right on the beach, delicious food – a fresh juice every morning, yoga at sunset, massages as you listen to the waves roll in… And the level of surf instruction from ground school to grabbing your first or 101st green wave is second to none. The team at PVA know what they’re doing. Whether you come alone or with others, the whole group learns, fails, succeeds and cheers each other on the whole time. Learn new or hone existing surf skills, build friendships, nap in a hammock, spy the monkeys in the trees, relax AND have fun. This retreat is the total package!
Dream first solo travel

Just wrapped an absolute dream week with Pura Vida and am already planning the next trip back. The whole team is truly wonderful; the coaches are technical and will push you, but are also warm, hilarious, and loving. I learned more in a week here than I did over a dozen private lessons with my local surf company — they don’t push you into waves or scream to “POP UP”, they really break the science of surf down. Pri, the retreat manager, is an angel on earth (literally, you’ll be eating your lunch and she’ll be taking your order for dinner). Hotel Tropico is gorgeous and has the best beach and restaurant in the area. Food is so fresh and delicious. Itinerary is just full enough, with the perfect amount of opportunity to have down time should you choose. And the people! It’s a down to earth vibe, and many campers are returnees (some have been 15 times which says a lot). This was my first solo travel and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Book this now, trust me!

This was such an incredible trip! Learning to surf was a blast and easier than expected thanks to the great guidance and support from the instructors. (All of us beginners stood up in day 1!) Everyone genuinely cares about your wellbeing and making sure you have fun while you’re here. Priscilla kept the group so organized and created a great sense of community for us. Pura Vida is a very special group that makes you feel like family!

This retreat far exceeded my expectations! The host and instructors are not only pros at what they do, but they’re all super cool and uplifting people who exemplify the Pura Vida life style! This retreat is for beginners or for well-seasoned surfers or even for people who use to surf as a kid (like me) and wants to get back into it even with injuries! Pri seamlessly coordinates all the surfing, activities and what not – so you can just show up or if you’re not feeling you can do whatever you desire – like a massage, stroll on the beach on sunbathe with a cocktail. The instructors are passionate coaches who help even the most advanced surfer with techniques and advice. I learned so much while having a great time!
The accommodations are great and the food is delicious! I plan to make this an annual must retreat for me!

The surf instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, caring and fun, embracing the guests like family. Our host Priscilla was incredible in planning and coordinating around everyone’s hopes and needs. Absolutely incredible experience—highly recommended to all! I came to this retreat expecting to relax, have fun, and play in the waves. I had no idea how profoundly impactful this week would be on body, mind, and soul! I had not surfed a day in my life before this week, but after the expert and clear instruction by Davide and Michi, I ended the week confidently and comfortably cruising on waves with a huge smile. Yoga with Karen to begin each day, daily schedules of retreat activities and additional adventures made easy thanks to Pri, Tierza’s warm and encouraging presence, gorgeous hotel surrounded by rainforest beauty and located right on the beach… everything was amazing.
Truly, though, surfing is life. So many of the lessons we learned applied not only to surf technique, but also to so many other aspects of life. I needed this week, and it more than delivered. Can’t wait to come back!

I feel like the word “amazing” is overused but there is no better word to describe the experience I just had here. One of the best trips of my life. From the setting beachside in the middle of palm trees (and howling monkeys), the teachers (Karen, Davide, Michi) who all truly care and make you feel so positive and successful every step of the way, and the remaining instrumental players (Pri, Tierza, Andres) who make you feel like their most important guest, to the food! Omg the food. In any event, if you’re trying to decide…just go!!! You will not regret it.

The retreat was perfect! The hotel is beautiful with everything you could want or need. The yoga is the perfect way to start your day. The food was the unexpected star of the experience, every single meal was fresh, delicious and filling. The surf lessons were thorough and very simple to follow, and the instructors are 2 of the kindest, most attentive and insightful human beings who provide excellent coaching but they also offered so much insight into a successful mindset and attitude. I will take these lessons home with the memories that I am truly grateful for.

Had the most amazing trip with PVA. Tierza and Victoria were the most incredible hosts and bent over backwards to accommodate our every need. From turtles to manta rays we saw it all, took boats out to uncrowded surf breaks and ate delicious food. Would highly recommend to anyone planning on visiting Indonesia. Thank you so much ladies we had the best time!

Pura Vida Surf Camp exceeded my expectations in every possible way. The surf coaching is unparalleled and completely changed the way I look at the ocean, paddle into a wave and commit to a line. The progress I saw working with Davide in one week was more than I’ve had surfing for 4 years. The emphasis on functional, efficient form was a game changer. Every member of the hotel and restaurant staff was kind and helpful throughout my stay.

Pricilla was our hostess with the,mostess , on top of it, made all the logistics run smoothly. Everyone was so nice and friendly. Lovely yoga sessions by the ocean,The hotel has a fantastic location. It is on the beach but set back so very private feeling , almost like in the jungle. Nice rooms, great food, and monkeys! We definitely want to return

Had an amazing time learning to surf with Pura Vida! -The instructors, Davide, Michelle, and Nikki, were all fantastic. Super patient, knowledgeable, and they broke down the techniques perfectly. I felt safe and saw real extraordinary progress in my surfing thanks to their guidance.
In addition to incredible surf instruction, there was also Pri who coordinated all the meals and activities everyday seamlessly and made the entire experience incredibly smooth. Couldn’t recommend this camp enough!

This is my second PVA experience, and I will be back again. The instruction has taken my surfing to the next level. The whole week is organized very well by the retreat hostess. The yoga is the perfect compliment. The photos and video are a great addition. The hotel is perfect! Thanks PVA crew!
phenomenal learning experience

Wrapping up my Pura Vida surf camp and let me tell you, what a phenomenal learning experience. It was the structured educational surf progression I was hoping for. The coaches are phenomenal (Thank you Davide, Michi, and Nikki!) and I’m leaving with more confidence and the foundation to progress and an awesome goal set. Pri, the host of the trip, was so accommodating, bubbly to be around, organized, and created a seamless itinerary. The lodging and food opportunities are top tier – I’m leaving well fed 😅. 10/10 would recommend as a surf camp that you will gain a lot of from, with all the creature comforts to make for a comfortable stay and vacation. Thank you guys! I’ll miss you all!
Chilling and Cruising in paradise at Pura Vida Adventures

Back again! Just winding down my 15th Surf & Yoga camp at PVA in the lively but chill town of Santa Teresa CR. I’ve been to other surf camps but, can’t stop returning here. It has become an addiction. It’s comfort food for the soul. Every trip feels like the best trip. The accommodations, food and staff at the Hotel Tropico Latino are excellent. Tucked away in an open air Tropical Jungle setting right on the beach with awesome views of the ocean that is just a few steps away. It’s paradise. The surfing experience is amazing and the coaches are outstanding. I came here initially as a beginner, never having stepped on a surfboard before, and have seen my skills grow by leaps and bounds over the years. It’s no one size meets all here. The coaches meet you where you are, adapt their guidance to your capabilities and help get you to where you want to get to. It’s low pressure, no stress, and tons of fun! If you don’t feel like surfing or doing yoga on some days you can just relax on the beach, in a hammock, get a massage or explore Santa Teresa. I’ve also met some wonderful people from all over the world. It’s a place to make new friends and a place to come back to where you feel like family. A big hug to our Hostess Priscilla who always has a smile on her face and always goes out of her way to make sure everyone has what they need and truly enjoys their visit. Much gratitude to our awesome coaches Davide, Michelle, Melissa and Nikki for all the diligent training, insights and for always supporting me on this journey and making it fun. And finally thank you Tierza for creating all this. It’s been life changing. Pura Vida!
Pura Vida Adventures, magical place of Santa Teresa

If you are looking for an unforgettable experience when surfing in the most beautiful spot in Costa Rica and practice yoga and sound baths on daily basis then Pura Vida Adventures is your place to go. I just came back from the week of surf and yoga retreat and I’m still living on my happy cloud. Everything about this place is magical, the perfect location of the hotel at the beach front (the only one in Santa Teresa which makes this place so special as you don’t have to drive anywhere or carry your equipment for kilometers before you reach the beach), food is super healthy and delicious and variety is endless. But what makes this place even more special are the people. Pri, the retreat manager makes all your wishes no matter how small or big come true. You want to zip line in your free time, Pri will sort it out for you. You want to horse back ride on the beach at the sunset, Pri knows the right people to contact. You want to come back with a new tattoo on your shoulder, she will give you the contact to the best tattoo place in Santa Teresa. And the list goes on. But of course you also want to surf and either learn or improve your skills, the surf instructors are the best in town. They have great balance between theory on land, time in the water and video analysis after your surfs. There is also professional photographer each day in a water with you taking your best shoots.
Pura Vida Adventures might not be the cheapest option for yoga and surf retreat in Costa Rica but trust me it is worth every penny and more. Overall it is 10/10

I had been searching for a friend to join me in completing my number one bucket list item: learning to surf in warm, clear water! After asking most of my mid-life-aged friends over the last few years, I finally found that friend, and off we went to spend the week on a women’s surf retreat with Pura Vida Adventures in Santa Theresa, Costa Rica. It was perfect.
We had never surfed before, and PVA’s instructors, Michie and Davide, were exceptional! Our weather was not perfect, but we learned so much. By the end of the week, I knew I’d have to come back; I hope again and again.
Everything was well organized. We had full days of meals, yoga with Karen, and surfing. We ate many meals with the group at the hotel or local eateries. Tierza and Pri organized zip-lining, horse riding, and a waterfall hike we will remember forever. Every day was a great experience, from breakfast to surfing to yoga to dinner with the group.
The retreat is hosted at Hotel Tropico Latino, an authentic Costa Rican hotel. The surf lessons took place just steps away from our room. It’s all set up perfectly.
I hope to come back one day soon with my husband and attend another PVA retreat. My dream is to have a group of women join me in CR with PVA for a big birthday!

I attended the Pura Vida Bali retreat after the advice of a friend, who had a world-class experience when she attended one in Costa Rica. My friend and I have both spent many days and dollars on retreats that advertise to be “luxury” and “professionally trained”, and only a handful lived up to their own hype. This trip is the one that managed to exceed both my expectations and their own “hype”.
The accommodations they chose were ones I would’ve chosen for myself with my own time and money (and I am very picky), the schedule was exactly what I hoped it would be- rigid as far as the quality of the waves and the timing that would be best for us, yet flexible when we had the ability to do so and needed to adapt to external circumstances.
The coaches who work with PV went above and beyond to help me correct some small but important nuances in my style that for years led to about a ~30% success rate of getting up on green waves. This was the first trip where I spent 90%+ of my time up and surfing, and that was thanks to Victoria and her keen eye.
There is a tremendous amount of care and concern that goes into to these retreats. They are truly not having a good time if you don’t feel you’re getting the most out of your experience. It had nothing to do with money, and everything to do with passion. Being a good surfer doesn’t automatically equip a person to teach it, but being passionate about developing a love of surfing in others was what they were about, and that’s what made all the difference.
We had an amazing trip, and while Indonesia was stunning, I’d follow this group anywhere just to experience the satisfaction of having finally progressed, after 10 years of thinking I was doomed to never being a real surfer. I went to bed every single night of this trip feeling like I’d come slightly farther than the previous day’s activities, satisfied that every precious dollar and minute was spent the best it possibly could have been. I’ve been home for a couple weeks and am still reeling from the whole experience, and I can’t wait to do it again.

Once-in-a-lifetime surf retreat in Bali!
I just returned from my second PVA retreat – this time in Indonesia – and it was an adventure for the ages. The small group size, lux accommodations, highly individualized coaching, video analysis, professional photography of us riding a gorgeous reef break and curated non-surf experiences (including a magnificent high-speed drift snorkel on Nusa Lembongan) made for an unforgettable experience. I especially appreciate all the care Victoria, Tierza and the PVA crew put into everything – from arranging some of the best meals I’ve enjoyed in recent history to finding the perfect board for the conditions and my (admittedly modest) surfing ability. This is my 16th surf retreat and easily one of the very best. Thanks for creating an experience I’ll never forget!
Fantastic instructors and good times
Pura Vida Adventures is an excellent surf camp. Whether you go to Costa Rica or Bali, the surf instructors are fantastic. You’ll definitely improve your surf skills! PVA takes care of everything, so you don’t have to second guess anything. Super chill and fun times will be had. I highly recommend PVA for a surf camp experience. You won’t be disappointed and in fact, you’ll have an experience you’ll never forget. Bali was super amazing!! The snorkeling was all time!

An absolute EPIC week of surfing in Bali with Pura Vida! The entire experience was perfect! Fantastic accommodations, excellent food, epic surfing and snorkeling, and of course our PVA instructors Victoria & Max! There’s not one thing I would change. Made new friends, overcame a fear, and experienced what the Bali life is all about. BIG thanks to the PVA team for an unforgettable trip!

The best surf instruction we have ever had. Davide and Michelle really know how to teach, imparting knowledge you can use We are beginners in our mid 70’s, so not easy grooms to teach. . Our hostess, Priscilla is gem. She made our trip and stay seamless . Karen was our yoga instructor and knew what we needed after a hard day. The people made our trip. And yes, the location is great, beautiful beaches, nice hotel, good food but it’s the staff at Pura Vida that differentiates them.
In the market for a surf board!!!
Pura Vida Adventures was awesome (I Highly Recommend). My wife, friends and I, all surfed for the first time. The head surf coach (Who I now Love) and his team did a fantastic job teaching us the science and psychology of surfing, as well as, a basic understanding of the ocean. Safety always comes first at Pura Vida, so no need to worry. The accommodations were 1st class and the food was amazing. Yoga was also fantastic. Our instructor adjusted the practice each day to fit our needs and sore bodies. I literally have nothing bad to say about Pura Vida. Oh, one last thing, our surf camp coordinator and our lady surf instructors were, OMG, Gorgeous!!! If you don’t think can get up on a board, think again, this team will teach you how. I’ve told all my friends and family, I’m in the market for a surf board! Pura Vida!!!

My husband and I attended the co-ed camp to celebrate our milestone birthdays. We are new to surfing and loved how Davide broke down the progression so that we have a great foundation. The food was amazing and Pri did a great job making sure we were making the most of our week. The yoga classes with Karen were key to make sure that we could surf each day. If you are looking for a surf camp that makes sure you have a great surfing foundation.
We'll be back.
Second trip to Costa Rica with Pura Vida and they are wonderful on all accounts! Surfing instructors are very well trained and teach everyone from beginner to advanced. Hotel Trópico Latino is amazing food and staff. Will be back next year!

This magical place has become dear to my ❤️ This is the second retreat for me and my sister and it won’t be the last!! From the detailed communications of the program director before arrival to the coordination of each day’s events, it has been flawless in every way. My sister and I didn’t surf, but the spa treatments were absolutely divine and the yoga classes were perfect for every level of skill. The entire experience is the perfect balance to strengthen body and soul. Highly recommend and already looking forward to next year’s visit! Pura Vida!
